Ragan Wallake - How to Make Healthy Decisions

Are you looking to start eating a little healthier? You can always check out food blogs, such as Ragan Wallake’s blog, if you want to try out some healthier recipes. She has a large variety of recipes for those who are vegetarians as well as carnivores. In general here a few tips that can help you make healthy options when you are buying food from the grocery store.

First tip come with a list! The major mistake people always make is not coming with a list, and making purchases based on their stomachs. That’s what the grocery stores want you to do; you’ll end up with a much higher bill at the end and with food that is not healthy at all.

Secondly when you are looking to buy starch based foods, stay away from the plain white bread or rice, and opt for whole grains. Whole grains contain more fiber, which is good for your digestive track, and have vitamins and minerals.

The next tip is to buy lots of fruits and vegetables; they contain vitamins and minerals and are an essential part of your diet. This doesn’t mean that it all has to be fresh, you can also try frozen or canned goods, just make sure that if you aren’t buying fresh that you are checking for extra additives in these items, the closer you can get to natural is always better.

Another tip is to aim to eat more fish in your diet. Fish contains Vitamin D as well as Omega-3 Fatty-acids; both of these things are great for your health. Especially if you live on the coast, the fresh fish will be amazing, but if you are land-locked you can always try frozen fish, to at least incorporate some into your diet.

Stay away from processed foods as much as you can. If you must, close your eyes while you are waiting to check out as that area is filled with processed foods with very high levels of sugar content. Of course it is not going to kill you to eat some in moderation, but moderation is the key word there. Instead of buying the pre-made cookies at the store, bake your own so you can monitor how much sugar and other ingredients you are putting in.

The best tip is to truly be aware of what you are putting into your body, and choose to cook and bake your own meals instead of buying meals that are already pre-made. This way you have control over what you are eating.
